A Good Spot

Space. Everyone needs space. A Good Spot (this blog/newsletter) is a documentation of the creation of a physical location, which, as I dream it, a place for animals to heal and be safe and, because humans are also animals, a place for humans to get away from modern worries and possibly to heal as well. Connecting with nature is a proven way to “rewire” our brains.

At the end of 2022, when I started this blog/newsletter, I envisioned and still envision a combination farm (or farm-like area) and wilderness preserve where I will live and take care of animals. The animal sanctuary will be a nonprofit. To help fund the nonprofit, I will provide people with the opportunity to rent campsites (or later, off-grid tiny homes, which I will learn how to build) in the woods. They can help with the animals or have time to themselves, have a retreat of their own design. I hope to lead writers’ retreats but otherwise let humans find and fuel their own creativity. Animals and nature can help humans, and humans can help animals and nature.

I intend to name the physical location A Good Spot.

A sanctuary for animals and a retreat for humans.

I am writing from the very beginning of this process and I don’t know what is going to pan out. I want to share my dreams and share the process here with writings, photos, podcasts, and maybe even videos.

Why subscribe or even pledge?

The first reason to subscribe would be to get full access to the blog/newsletter and website. Subscriptions are free. You could pledge, for free. Pledging is not paying right away; a subscriber pledges to become a paid subscriber if and when I turn on paid subscriptions. I will not “turn on”paid subscriptions until there are dogs who will benefit directly from the funds collected through this substack. (And to be as transparent as possible, my current timeline doesn’t forecast that happening for at least a year, maybe two. In the meantime, having pledges will almost certainly make A Good Spot more visible to Substack’s algorithm, so by pledging, you can help A Good Spot for free.) When I do turn on paid subscriptions, every thin dime will go directly to rescued animals.

The second reason to subscribe would be so that you won’t have to worry about missing anything, because every new edition of the blog/newsletter should go directly to your inbox. (I also keep a video channel: click here.)

The third reason to subscribe is probably the most important one. You can join the pack.

The Pack

Because this is a humble learning process, I hope we will build a pack of peer-teachers and fellow-learners who will welcome input from anyone who wishes to offer wisdom gained from experience, suggestions from the heart, and insights from innate intelligence. We can figure it out, whatever “it” is. It will work out if we try. A pack takes care of each other.

The kind of respectful internet community that a pack can be is a reason I chose to use Substack as the platform for sharing. To find out more about the company that provides the tech for this newsletter, visit Substack.com.

Subscribe to A Good Spot

A documentation of what will surely be a long process of building an animal sanctuary. From dreaming through all the uncertainties to, hopefully, the creation of a good spot where animals and humans can find a bit of peace.

People

Historian and professor by trade, animal care-taker in my blood and my bones. I don’t hold many strong beliefs, but these I do: 1) reason is a human’s greatest asset; and 2) Han shot first. I promise not to write tripe unless context calls for it.
