B doesn’t always know what to do with her emotions.
She makes a funny noise, like a bark, not sharp but more like an elongated doggo attempt to say, “I’m so happy to see you! I can’t believe we’re in each other’s lives! Do you know how cosmically improbably and wonderful that is?!”
She begins to dig into the carpet but catches your foot and when you say “Ow!” to let her know to stop, she crouches and sprints away only to turn around and charge you with full-zoomie speed. She jumps at your legs but at the last second rolls onto her back to accept a belly rub.
“We’ve talked about this, Beatrix,” I coo, using her full name to signal the weight of what I’m about to say.
“Love shouldn’t hurt.”
She smiles, paws at my hand, and bites my hand softly before getting up to find a bone to chew.
Love is patience.
Love is kindness.
Love is also healthy boundaries.
