Ear Formations
It would be understandable if one assumed that a particular ear formation indicated Uša’s attention direction or level of interest in what he is looking at. This cannot be discounted as puppies are highly reactive to their environmental stimuli. We also cannot discount the possibility that they are random formations and the ears are outside his control. If that’s true, then maybe an alien trapped in his body is controlling them and is trying to get help by sending semaphore-like signals (it’s what I’d do). An alien trapped in his body might explain a few of this ragamuffin’s behaviors.
Futile jokes aside, Uša is an all-American mutt whose lineage doesn’t matter but has endowed him with spectacular ears. And they’re real.
The ears act independently of each other. Each of them can:
stand straight up
fold over on itself
bend to the middle
be in what I call the “factory default” position, or the “down” position
lay all the way down, or the “way down” position
As I round a corner or, more likely, I turn around to see him following me with one of these configurations on top of his head. I have no idea what they are communicating but they always make me smile.
Get ready for photo-overload…
Uša is about to turn seven months old in January 2025. Here are a couple bonus throwback photos when he was still a foster with his sister at my house — back when he weighed half as much as he does now. The ear formations were a strong presence then, for both him and his sister.
Conclusions
After uncountable observations of these ear formations I have reached the conclusion that they are adorable, charming, and, most of all, inscrutable.
As
said, “You gotta love that ear” and Lisa said, “The ears just kill me!” Thank you for loving on my Uša like I do, every day.Pledges to A Good Spot

Well done, Jeanne. I don't think I've ever seen a post about ears! Delightful. Give that pup a pet.
I love him and his ears!
